Rally Paris-Dakar 1987
1987 Dakar Rally also known as the 1987 Paris-Dakar Rally was the 9th running of the Dakar Rally event. The rally was won by 1981 world rally champion, Ari Vatanen.[1] Cyril Neveu won his fifth motorcycle title after Hubert Auriol broke both ankles in a fall and retired.
For the 1987 and 9th "Paris-Alger-Dakar Telefunken" Rally, Team ACP raced the Toyota Land Cruiser BJ71V named "Toyota Naruhodo", in the modified diesel category of the marathon class and captured first place. Driver Ratet finished 4th overall, and Toyota swept the top three positions in the unmodified production category. In total, Toyota won two championships.Peugeot entered the fray for the 1987 Dakar Rally, adapting the stunning turbo-charged 205 T16 for desert raiding and signing up World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen for his first major event since his life-threatening crash 18 months earlier in Argentina. If the French marque were to win, it would have to overcome challenges from two factory-supported Mitsubishi teams, led by Andrew Cowan, the mighty Range Rovers of Patrick Zaniroli and Grand Prix star Patrick Tambay, and multiple winner Jacky Ickx, now behind the wheel of a Lada Niva. The motorcycle battle was just as hotly contested, with Cyril Neveu bidding for a fifth win on his Honda against strong competition from the likes of Gaston Rahier and Hubert Auriol. Plus, of course, there were the always dramatic trucks fighting for glory.
